چکیده

When denervation was performed by nerve-cutting and nerve-crushing in chickens, three phases could be observed morphologically. The first phase was characterized by foregoing degenerative changes of the neuro-muscular junctions (axon terminals), followed by atrophic changes of the muscle fibers. The second phase was characterized by irregular arrangement of the myofila-ments in atrophic muscle fibers and appearance of regenerative muscular changes by 20 days after denervation. By this time, no morphological differences could be discerned between the nerve-cut and the nerve-crushed specimens. The third phase was characterized by distinct morphological differences between the nerve-cut and the nerve-crushed specimens. This phase began from the 30-day after denervation. These differences became more marked day by day. On the 60-day after denervation, almost all muscle fibers showed normal structures of the myofibrils in the nerve-crushed specimens, whereas, muscle fibers were still atrophic in the nerve-cut specimens.

Ultrastructural Changes in the Skeletal Muscle of Senile Rats with Significant Age-Dependent Motor Deficits

The anterior tibial (AT) muscle of 6 female Wistar rats aged 35-44 months, was examined by an electron microscopy. Previously, significant age-dependent functional and morphological deficits were found in these rats including [1] a strongly decreased muscle mass and force, [2] muscle stiffness, [3] spontaneous, tonic electromyographic activity, and [4] light-microscopic features of chronic dene...

Spinal Muscular Atrophy: A Short Review Article

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a genetic disorder which affect nervous system and is characterized with progressive distal motor neuron weakness. The survival motor neuron (SMN) protein level reduces in patients with SMA. Two different genes code survival motor neuron protein in human genome. Skeletal and intercostal muscles denervation lead to weakness, hypotony, hyporeflexia, respiratory fa...

Correlation between Ultrastructural and Molecular Changes in Denervated Muscle: a Paradigm Based on Functional Electrical Stimulation

Soon after denervation, skeletal muscle undergoes ultrastructural and molecular changes that ultimately lead to muscle atrophy and cell death. Functional electrical stimulation (FES) is effective in preventing the atrophy of denervated muscles, but it is unclear whether FES can prevent the progression of ultrastructural changes in the sarcotubular system and cell death after denervation. In thi...
